My apologies if it's not as good as it should be, it was two in the morning when I started working on this.
Name: Averil (duh)
Age: Probably about twenty-five years old.
Appearance: Tanned skin lies over a face with very fine,
pointed features, aside from her nose which although it is pointed it's actually slightly larger than average. Narrow green eyes glare out from under constantly-furrowed brows even as a ragged curtain of red bangs attempts to block them from view. Her red hair is held back by a simple gray strip of cloth, knotted underneath due to her dislike of its... perkiness when the knot was in view. The hair itself is untamed -- and not just a romantic version of
untamed where the curls gracefully intertwine and gleam in the candlelight, either. It looks as if Averil's hair hasn't seen a brush in a very long time, though she drags one through it just often enough to make sure it won't get in her way. Why doesn't she cut it? Well, to be honest she doesn't really care. But more on that later.
Averil's clothes are very simple, and meant to be easy to move in. She wears a a cream-colored blouse under a tight brown corset, though a kind of sloppy tunic-like effect is created by the fact that the blouse is not tucked in but instead falls unevenly out over her brown riding breeches after the corset ends. The black leather-wrapped hilt over sword, with its elegantly tooled silver crossguard, shines in contrast with the rest of Eiddwyn -- her Paladin's shield is battered and scraped from far too many battles and even the very scabbard her sword rests in is a bit the worse for wear.
Family: All dead. Yep, all of 'em. Even the one she wasn't really related to. But more on that later.
Personality: Bitter. Very, very bitter is the Paladin lady, and she has her reasons for that. Averil really isn't much like the stereotypical image of a Paladin: she has a mouth on her like a sailor and a temper like a dragon. She's
overall a very cranky person, and completely willing
to beat up anyone who bothers her -- unless she's in one of her lazy moods. That's usually when she's considering cutting her hair. She doesn't seem to care about anyone or anything anymore, not even herself.
But first impressions are not always accurate. Underneath her gruff, apathetic exterior is a young woman who cares passionately about a few pet causes - i.e., improving the treatment and perception of half-bloods in society and preventing/destroying corruption in religion.. She's always willing to lend a helping hand, though she will always act as if she's being dragged into things against her will. She will fight and die for someone she hardly knows if she thinks the cause is just.
Likes: Averil loves her horse. He's not associated with any memories of her past, which are bittersweet at best. Although, she doesn't act like it, Averil does like children and often goes out of her way to help any that she finds in trouble. She also, however, likes to drink.
Dislikes: Perversely, Averil hates the way she acts
when she's drunk but hey, at least she forgets for a little while. She also hates it when Christianity is misrepresented by its followers and especially thinks no one should ever claim to speak for God. That's actually a large part of why she has never attempted to make any changes to herself for the sake of religion; she figures if God has a problem with her attitude, he'll say so, one way or another.
History: I’ll get the full story up in this thread eventually, but for now I’ll just give you the general gist. Averil’s parents died in a blizzard when she was an infant. Held between the two of them, she miraculously survived and was found after the blizzard by an elf traveling by. He took her home and raised her with his human wife alongside their half-elven son Derek, who was about Averil’s age. Averil proved to have the fiery temperament her name implies, and she and Derek fought often. Despite this, they had a very strong brother-sister relation. Averil felt as if he was his brother by blood, and called Silvanus and Lilian Father and Mother despite the fact that she knew she wasn’t related to any of them.
Then, about ten years after Averil’s unofficial adoption, her life was shattered. For years the family had been having trouble with local religious authorities, and one night in late June it all came to a climax. A mob came and set the house on fire with the family in it, though first they came in and took Averil because she was a pure-blooded human. She fought as hard as she could, but let’s face it, she was ten. The villagers forced her to watch as a lesson not to associate with “those demons” (elves, Averil thought rebelliously). She was placed with the headman, his wife, and their three children to be raised to hate the elves as much as they did, but escaped before too long. She almost died of starvation before reaching the nearest city (again, she was ten). There she took up life as a thief, but was caught before too long by a clergyman, who took her in and taught her about Christianity as it was meant to be. Soon she discovered the Paladins and chose to become one of them. Donnelly was given to her by her old tutor the day she received her shield and was sent out into the world to spread Christianity and do good in the Lord’s name.* What she’s really doing for the most part is striking down corruption in her religion wherever she can find it but hey, that’s close enough, right?
Other information: Averil rides a big black warhorse named Donnelly, which in Gaelic means "dark courage." Although she rides into battle without armor, she loves Donnelly dearly and once tried to make him wear it. He, however, refused. Averil gave in before he did, and the idea never resurfaced.
*I don’t know if this is actually how things work for Paladins, so bear with me. I had to get her on her way to Adunasir somehow, and we already have a Paladin who was sent here specifically *bows respectfully in Creil Bevier’s general direction*. We still don’t know why he was sent, though…
