It had taken Cirion several days to cross the grasslands near the lake, and now he was on the last stretch of his journey. His eyes examined the walls of the city of Rhyfaugh, and couldn't see any sentries posted on the wall. Either they had no sentries or they were all in the bar, both of these were unacceptable variables for the knight; he had seen peasants that were better defended than this.
As his gray eyes continued to probe the walls, he was astonished to find the gates wide open, and rusted in place. People walked through as they pleased and didn't seem to have a care about the outside world. Well, they would care when an enemy sacked their city since they had no visible defenses besides the might of the old wall.
Well, at least they would die happy if such a fate were to befall on the city. Cirion know that the reasons for his coming were correct; the city looked in dire need for help. Cirion continued to have his charger head for the gate, until he noticed someone that intrigued him.

Adrienne had warily watched him approach she had been told that someone would come and help protect the town and she hoped he was. There where not that many protectors of the town but she was a squire and had to help. She walked out her hand on her sword just in case and waited.

The knight saw the girl walk closer to him, and he stopped his horse and dismounted. Holding the reins, he walked with the horse behind him toward the girl. Cirion saw that there was a fire that dwelt within the girl's eyes and smiled to himself inside of his helm. His armor clinked as he continued, his sheathed sword gently swaying as it hung from his side.
He met the girl about halfway to the gate, and stopping; he lifted his visor and his faced was revealed. His short, graying beard was weathered from the way he lived, as was his white skin. His gray eyes shone with a benign light and they radiated that he know what he was doing. Looking at the girl, Cirion asked her, "Are you in charge of these gates, girl? If not, then where are the guards? Surely they must be around here somewhere?. But I have forgotten myself; I'm am Sir Cirion Derufin, but the Sir is just used for ceremonies and such. Who might you be?"

"My name is Adrienne and yes I guess I am sort of in charge of these gates." she said.

"Well, if it were in my authority, I would have your fellows punished for not holding their posts. But here, I have no authority, so it would seem that they are safe," said Cirion Derufin. He couldn't stand sloppiness, exspecially on this level. Leaving a gate wide open was one thing, but having only one person to guard it? He was hard pressed not to let a look of disgust reveal itself. He looked at Adrienne, and he thought that she was too young for such duties...unless she showed something that others her age lacked.
Cirion used his left gauntlet to wipe away the sweat on his brow and looked once more at Adrienne. "Tell me Adrienne, does this city have an army? Who is the lord and how may I meet him. That's all I wish to know for now."

Adrienne thought for awhile "No I don't think it does have an army. The lord is Rit Megliaf and you probably have to get an appointment to see him." she said.

Upon hearing this, Cirion gaped with disbelief; a city of this size and no army to protect it! Whoever ran the defenses of this city really must be addled in the brain, for anyone could realize the importance of a fighting force.
He looked at Adrienne, and noticed that she was wearing a sword at her side. Curious, Cirion asked her, "Why is it that you at such a young age wear a sword at your side? What occupation do you have, Adrienne?"

"I wear this sword at my side because I'm a squire and as a squire I have to have something to train with plus to protect myself if needed." she said.

"A squire, eh? May I ask who you serve?" questioned Cirion. Looking at her, Cirion realized how like the two would have had been if he was still a squire. He was a bit younger than she was when he first started, but it really didn't matter all to much; as long as you could wield a blade, you were set. Cirion remembered the knight that he served as a squire. The knight was a kindly old man who taught Cirion all that he knew. Sir Arthedain was this knight's name, and none had heard from him in 10 years.
His gray eyes bore through Adrienne, as if to look at her soul. She had the potential, but did she want to become this? Sir Derufin then said, "And if you don't a knight that you serve, that leaves me to do some thinking."

Adrienne answered truefully "I do not serve anyone."

"Hmm. This leaves me to think on a particular matter", said Cirion. Was this young girl ready to accept such an offer if it was given to her; there would be no turning back for her if she accepted. He felt that there was something else to this girl, but he saved those thoughts for later.
He lowered his visor and remounted his horse. He looked at Adrienne and said, "Until we meet again, young squire. Remember, Cirion Derufin will be keeping a close eye on you. Until we meet again, Adrienne." He set his horse to trot through the gates, and cast another glance at Adrienne. If she survived, then she would become a good knight if she chose to do so.

Adrienne stood there for a few minutes before chasing after him and then she yelled "Hey wait a minute!"

Stopping his steed, Cirion Derufin turned around in his saddle and looked back at Adrienne, who was running after him at a fast pace. He once more dismounted his horse and walked over to Adrienne, leading the horse by the reins.
When he met Adrienne in the middle of her path, Cirion flipped open his visor and gazed benignly on the girl. His graying beard glinted in the sun from sweat as he asked Adrienne, "Is there something else you desire to know, Adrienne?"

"Well, then say it; I not going to stop you.", replied the knight in a kind voice. Why had Adrienne come after him with such haste? Whatever the reason was, Cirion thought that it would be rather important for Adrienne to leave her post at the gate.
